In Ireland, electrical contractors are regulated through the Safe Electric scheme, which is overseen by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities. A contractor on the register is called a Registered Electrical Contractor, or REC.
What the certificate is
When a REC finishes certain types of work, they test it and issue a completion certificate. It confirms the work was tested and meets the national wiring rules. You should receive a copy.
Which jobs need one
Broadly: new installations, new circuits, fuse board replacements and work in higher-risk locations such as bathrooms. Like-for-like replacement of a socket or light fitting generally does not. If you are unsure, ask before the work starts.
Why it matters
- It is your evidence that the work was done by someone qualified and insured to do it.
- Insurers may ask for it after a claim.
- Solicitors often ask for it when a house is sold.
- Grants for EV chargers and solar require it.
How to check a contractor
Search for the contractor on safeelectric.ie. If they are not on the register, they cannot legally carry out restricted electrical work in your home or certify it.
